Dear readers, this blog is for avid fans, fans of sports, noisy companies and fun and it is dedicated to the most interesting arenas in the world.
An arena is a facility for public events. There is not much difference between an arena and a stadium, although the arena is closed and the stadium sometimes has an open roof. Soccer is usually played in a stadium, while basketball and other sports are usually played in arenas. The word “arena” originally meant “place of battle” and is sometimes still used in that sense today. Its root is harena, a type of sand that was supposedly used on the floor during ancient Roman battles to soak up spilled blood.
The great era of stadium construction came in the first three decades of the 20th century. More than 100 large stadiums were built in the United States. Most were built because college sports, especially soccer, drew large crowds. Thus, some of the biggest stadiums are on college campuses. The University of Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, for example, was built in 1927 and had a capacity of 79,000. By 1956, capacity had been increased to 101,000. It soon became a hallmark for the university to have a large stadium on campus.
